Established in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal, the Institute was declared as a Deemed to be University on June 26, 2002, an Institute of National Importance on August 15, 2007 and is currently governed by National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 and rules laid down by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
